The Nature of Community and Social Networks

Involvement with others is a basic characteristic of being human; it’s ingrained into our psyche to be connected with and to others. We seek out spaces and create times to be together. Every day we interact with people – at work, on the bus, in our family. The result? A reciprocal exchange of influence, where we influence others, and in turn, they influence us.

The World Wide Web has become a place and a space for social interaction. A place without borders and limitless potential, where communities are transforming and orienting around geographically dispersed spaces, becoming a catalyst for personalization, self-expression, and community.

Where people are fulfilling the need to become more deeply involved with others and interests that kindle passionate involvement. To satisfy the drive for more than a superficial or fleeting experience, but to be immersed so nothing is missed and to connect personally and directly to feed the passion further.

Some of the more important features of these places and spaces are:

* A collective identity
* A sense of shared purpose
* Structured patterns of interaction
* Structured methods of communication
* Personal and task interdependence
* Interpersonal attraction
* A shared common fate
* A perception of the unit as a group

At heart is the emotional center, transforming the places and spaces into a more integrated foundation of social experience.
